Accessibility at Rabbit Hole Rescue
We believe clear information and calm, usable experiences should be available to everyone. This page explains the steps we take to make our website and services accessible, the standards we aim for, and how to contact us if you need support.
Our standard and approach
-
We aim to conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), the internationally recognised benchmark for accessible web content.
-
We use the NZ Government Web Accessibility Standard as a reference point for good practice (it’s mandatory for government agencies, not private businesses, but it’s a sensible bar to meet). New Zealand Digital government+1
What we’ve built in
-
Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements are reachable and usable with a keyboard. Visible focus states are retained.
-
Headings & landmarks: Logical H1–H6 order and ARIA landmarks to support screen-reader navigation.
-
Images: Informative images include meaningful alternative text; decorative images are marked as decorative.
-
Colour & contrast: Text and UI components meet WCAG AA contrast ratios.
-
Forms: Labels are associated with inputs; errors are described in text; instructions aren’t conveyed by colour alone.
-
Links & buttons: Links are descriptive, with clear hover/focus states.
-
Motion & media: We avoid auto-playing media and respect reduced-motion preferences; captions or transcripts are provided for essential audio/video.
-
Responsive layout: Content reflows on small screens without loss of functionality.
What we’re improving next (roadmap)
-
Move new designs toward WCAG 2.2 AA alignment.
-
Add transcripts to earlier videos where missing.
-
Replace any PDF downloads with HTML equivalents or offer accessible PDF + alternate formats.
-
Extend testing across more assistive tech and mobile screen readers.
Compatibility & testing
We test using modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox) on desktop and mobile, and we spot-check with NVDA, VoiceOver, and keyboard-only use. We combine automated checks (axe, Lighthouse) with manual testing by a human.
Third-party content
Some features (e.g., embedded schedulers, payment widgets, or social media if used) are provided by third parties. We choose vendors that state WCAG support where possible, but you may encounter limitations we don’t control. If you do, please tell us and we’ll provide an alternative.
If you need an alternative format
If any page or document is hard to use, we’ll provide the information in a format that works for you (for example, an accessible HTML page, large-print PDF, or a short video walkthrough), within reasonable timeframes.
